About the UPJFHL
The UPJFHL is a long-standing fun, highly intense, and highly competitive keeper fantasy hockey league. The UPJFHL was founded as an 18 team league in 2004 by Matt Bodenschatz. At the time, Matt was a student at the University of Pitt-Johnstown, hence the league name UPJFHL (i.e. University of Pitt Johnstown Fantasy Hockey League). The league began drafting in the summer of 2004 and due to the 2004-05 NHL lockout, this draft lasted nearly a year and was conducted on runboard. The UPJFHL officially began play in 2005-06 using Yahoo as a host site. Late in 2005-06, our league admin team, then consisting of Matt and (now former) league members Lucas Cannizaro and Andy Tulley hired a site programmer to create a special website for league activity entitled UPJFHL.com. The programmer was also offered a team in the league, which he operated under the title Leeds Puckheads. The league would use this website from 2006 through 2012 for all offseason drafts, tracking of picks, recording of league history, and general offseason league discussion.
In 2007-08, the league voted to transform the UPJFHL from a free league to a money league, with all league fees being used to distribute prize money for the league champion, runner up, regular season champions, and several category winners.
At the conclusion of the 2008-09 season, the league, having experienced much turnover and having realized the thinness of some of the rosters, voted to contract the league size from 18 teams to 16 teams (eliminating Father Time and GoPatsGoPens, who had won the 2008 UPJFHL Title under the name Albuquerque Turkeys)in time for the 2009-10 season in an effort to make rosters more competitive. This resulted in a unique 2009 draft with players such as Henrik Lundqvist and Corey Perry being made available due to having been on the contracted teams. In the fall of 2009, the league voted to migrate from Yahoo to ESPN and to split into two, eight team divisions. At the time, league members considered ESPN to be superior to Yahoo.
Prior to the 2010-11 season, the league voted to expand the playoff field from 6 teams to 8 in an effort to keep more teams engaged and active at the end of the season. In 2011, this immediately led to a playoff upset, as the #8 seeded Ice knocked off the #1 seeded AndyAvalanche. 3 seasons later, in 2014, Better than Awful would become the first 8th seed to raise the UPJFHL Cup
As the quality of ESPN's site and the attentiveness of ESPN employees to fantasy hockey continued to deteriorate, the admins migrated the league to Fantrax, in time for the 2012-13 season. With the owner of Leeds Puckheads having departed the UPJFHL after the 2010-11 season, the admins saw a need to discontinue the use of UPJFHL.com. Thus, all draft activity was also moved to Fantrax in time for the 2013 draft. It continues there to this day.
About our Admins
The UPJFHL is unique in that it is governed, not by a totalitarian Commissioner, but by a 4 man admin team. The admins, who manage the league on a voluntary basis, make decisions that improve the health of the league as a whole and are in the league's best interest, even if such decisions are detrimental to their own teams. our league admins are as follows:
Andrew Showers-Andrew is the Chairman of the UPJFHL Admin team, a position he assumed following the 2015-16 season. He is the owner of AndyAvalanche, a 2 time winner of the UPJFHL Title and a 4 time finalist. Andrew joined the UPJFHL in the summer of 2005 during the inaugural year long draft, taking over a team entitled "The Drunkards" after that owner missed several draft picks. Andrew joined the league through Justin Semke, a former UPJFHL member, and mutual friend of he and Matt Bodenschatz. It was Andrew's first fantasy sports league of any sort and it has spawned a fantasy sports obsession (Andrew eventually created his own league based on the UPJFHL rules and helped found 2 others that are based on these rules). Andrew has been part of the league's admin team since the 2010 offseason. He is a fan of the Avalanche and Blue Jackets but admits that his favorite teams are actually his fantasy teams.
Matt Bodenschatz-Matt is the founder of the UPJFHL and an avid Penguins fan. Matt served as the chairman of the Admin team from 2004 through the end of the 2015-16 season when he stepped down in favor of Andrew. At the request of the other admins, Matt continues to stay on as a league admin, providing valuable input. Matt is the owner of the Zerstorers, who won the UPJFHL Regular season title in both 2008 and 2009.
Josh Endsley-Josh joined the UPJFHL prior to the 2006-07 season, taking over the PW Panthers roster and renaming the team, Team Jyeah. Team Jyeah has enjoyed the most success of any UPJFHL team and has reached the UPJFHL Finals a record 5 times, winning the title a record 3 times. Josh joined the admin team in 2008. Like Matt, he is a huge Penguins fan
Zach Boslett-Zach is the owner of Better than Awful, the 2014 UPJFHL Champions. He has been in the UPJFHL since 2009 when he inherited the roster vacated by the owner of French Connection. Like Matt and Josh, Zach is a big Penguins fan. Having joined the UPJFHL several years in, Zach missed out on crafting his own team. Therefore, Zach founded his own league that was based on the rules of UPJFHL. Andrew helped Zach found this league. Zach has been a league admin since 2013
